A Quick Guide to Exploring Portland’s NE Tillamook Neighborhood Greenway

Transit: Streetcar Line B

Distance: 5 miles total ( 2.5 miles out and back)

Drinks: Steeple Jack Brewing

Eats: Doe Donuts (vegan), Taste Tickler

To bike the NE Tillamook neighborhood greenway, start at NE Tillamook and NE 7th. If you are taking public transit from another part of town, there are a few Streetcar Line B stops a few blocks away.

The greenway has older houses with a little more of urban feel. There are some trees lining the streets, but we didn’t see as many bikers as during a usual outing in the city. However, the proximity to NE Broadway means that it is a convenient way to get to many different businesses and restaurants.

There was some interesting biking infrastructure, including a stop light detecting bicycles. It’s a minor feature, but we appreciate this design which saves internal debate whether the light will change or if you need to cross at the pedestrian crosswalk.

At NE 14th, a right turn will take you to Taste Tickler, a Portland institution which has combination of sandwiches and Japanese teriyaki bento boxes. Once you get to NE 24th, you can make a turn to go to Steeplejack Brewing for German style beers and pub fare. The brewery is located in an old church so it’s not the run-of-the mill brewery in a garage: the atmosphere is unique.

If you are more in the mood for breakfast or snacks, you can turn right at NE 40th to head to Doe Donuts. The donuts are vegan but stand up to any other donuts in quality and flavor. If you eat outside, check out the bike themed gate around the corner. Note that getting here includes a busy crossing at NE Sandy.
